Business Review: Turntable Kitchen

I like to review websites, blogs, and other things here on Rawr Academy because I enjoy showing my appreciation for the effort and creativity others put into their work. I know our little shop can get there one day with a little bit of effort and creativity of its own. Most of my reviews are super positive because I pick subjects I truly enjoy. This week on the podium: Turntable Kitchen.
Turntable Kitchen is one of those things you land on accidentally and think: “Man, that’s cool.” I’m not sure if they know how cool they are, but if I had a cool medal to hand out, I’d give it to them. But then, they might be too cool for it. So I’ll just admire them from a distance so as to not dim down their coolness.
Turntable Kitchen was started by Kasey + Matt Hickey. Picture Matt as the turntable and Kasey as the kitchen. Both together offer a unique look on living: how to pair delicious home-cooked meals with cool beats and beets. If you subscribe to their pairings box, you will receive each month a limited edition 7″ vinyl record of an artist handpicked by Matt, 3-4 recipes created by Kasey, a premium ingredient such as Vietnamese Saigon Cinnamon (!) to use in the month’s recipes, and a digital playlist that will make you insta-cool.
I’ve received 26 boxes from them in total, starting with #5. Each month, I try to cut down on expenses, but I could never quit Turntable Kitchen. I enjoy the surprise of opening my box every month and finding a colourful vinyl, a new spice to add to my collection, yummy recipes printed on postcards, and more tunes to download and discover. Matt’s talent is to dig out the best new music before anyone else. I’ve often become obsessed with a band, only to find out that Matt had already suggested their songs months and months earlier. Kasey, on the other hand, is the creator. She manages to put her little twist on every single recipe. Give this chick a book deal already! I haven’t tried them all out yet, but my favourites have been:
– Roasted Carrots with Smoked Paprika and Honeyed Yogurt
– Slow Roasted Tomato, Black Quinoa, and Roasted Radish Salad
– Deviled Eggs with Fried Capers and Anchovies
– Spaghetti all’Arrabbiata
– Spicy Turkey Chili with Espresso and Cocoa
– Handmade Chocolate and Mint Truffles
– Harvest Tagine with Lemony Yogurt
– Deconstructed Sushi Bowl…
You don’t need to subscribe to their Pairings box to enjoy the couple’s coolness: you can take it all in by checking out their website and instagram. It’s incredibly inspiring to see them launch their business and start a family together because that’s what Greg and I are trying to do! They’re absolute marketing wizards. We have a lot to learn from them. I simply love how they branded themselves, how they package each month’s box, the colours they pick for the vinyls, the way the meals are photographed, etc. Since I’ve been hooked on TK, I feel about 10% cooler, and that’s a good feeling.
